Grief Recovery Series By Patricia D. Freudenberg
There’s an old saying: “Pink skies at night, sailors delight. Pink skies in the morning, sailors take warning.”
This nautical phrase was meant to predict the weather, but as an end-of-life coach, I often find deeper meaning in these natural signs. I find myself gazing at pink skies—pausing in awe, letting the beauty wash over me. It always brings a smile, a sense of peace, and a gentle reminder that hope still hovers above us like a soft glow in the heavens.
The “pink sky at night” is a signal of delight. A mystical assurance. A sigh of serenity for what’s ahead. But then there’s the other half: the pink sky in the morning—an omen of an incoming storm. How fitting for the grief journey. Sometimes, we wake up and the weight of sorrow is already upon us. We didn’t ask for it, but there it is. Storm clouds forming inside our hearts before our feet even hit the floor.
So what do we do?
We have choices, even if they feel few and far between. We can stay in wonderment. We can lean into the light of remembrance. We can allow grief to teach us instead of consume us. What we focus on, grows. What we give our energy to, shapes our experience.
As Dr. Deepak Chopra writes, karma is not only long-term cause and effect; it can be instant, too. And so I ask you gently: Where are you placing your focus today?
Yes, life gets stormy. And yes, pink skies can feel like a rare luxury. But if we train our hearts to recognize beauty—even in small doses—we begin to shift our experience of grief. Not by erasing it, but by transforming our relationship with it.
I’m a mystic at heart. I see signs in the sky. I find metaphors in the wind. If this resonates with you, I invite you to keep reading, keep reflecting, and stay open to the mystical. If not, there are many paths to healing, and each one is sacred in its own right.
I share these thoughts not just as a writer, but as someone walking beside you. As a certified end-of-life coach, this is my service. My mission. My ministry of presence.
Thank you for being here. Thank you for reading.
Prompt for Reflection:
When was the last time you paused to look at the sky? What message—if any—did it offer your heart in that moment?
