A Grief Recovery Series: By Patricia D. Freudenberg aka Patty from New York
Poem: Juneteenth – A New Start
Juneteenth is here — and long overdue. Redemption is sweet, and so are you. Freedom for all is the only way To live a life that’s humane each day.
God bless all who suffered, even in vain, Their silent cries, their endless pain. Forever we’ll honor, forever we’ll name — Your courage ignited a sacred flame.
Making a movement — that was the hook. But courage of the heart is what it took. No excuse can ever undo The past… but with love, we start anew.
We rise today, not just to recall, But to lift each other — one and all. Truth is the soil, justice the seed, Unity and peace are what we need.
So let the bells of freedom ring, For every voice has a song to sing. Not just a date — but a light so true. Juneteenth lives… in me and you.
Reflection: A Day to Remember
Although Juneteenth commemorates a moment from long ago, the sentiments remain deeply present. We remember those who perished in the name of justice — not just as part of history, but as part of our collective grief.
Here in the United States of America, Juneteenth is more than a date on the calendar. It is a day of remembrance. A moment to pause, reflect, and honor. Sadly, many around the world may not acknowledge it, and some may never even hear of it. But for those of us who understand its weight, we carry the responsibility to never forget.
This may seem like old news to some. But the truth is, it marks a time in history that is both sobering and sacred. It’s hard to believe such injustice ever occurred — and yet, it did. That is why we honor. That is why we remember.
As someone who walks with others through the valleys of grief, I know this truth: Once we know better, we do better. And healing is not only possible — it is necessary.
Let Juneteenth remind us that grief can become fuel for transformation. Let it remind us that truth-telling is part of healing. And above all, let it remind us that when we stand together, love leads the way forward.
May we never forget the lives lost. May we always choose to rise with empathy, wisdom, and resolve — because healing begins when remembrance meets purpose.
Reflection Prompt:
When you reflect on Juneteenth, what emotions rise to the surface — grief, pride, anger, hope? How can honoring the past help you heal in the present? What does “starting anew with love” mean to you, personally or collectively?
