Grief Recovery Series by Patricia D. Freudenberg
Dear Reader,
In this grief series, I write to you—the survivor. The one who remains. The one navigating life after loss. The one who still has breath in their lungs, even when the air feels heavy.
Grief has a way of bringing resistance. Some days feel like you’re walking against the wind—pushed back by sorrow, slowed by memory, tested by every step forward. And yet, here you are. Still standing. Still going.
The other day, I was listening to “Blowin’ in the Wind” by Bob Dylan, and the lyrics hit me like a sacred echo. Dylan’s words, steeped in soul and sorrow, carried a parable that felt deeply aligned with the grief journey. The song is filled with questions—some unanswered, some unanswerable—and that, too, is the essence of grief.
“How many roads must a man walk down…”
Each road, each memory, each day without the person we lost, is a question. And though we may not find all the answers, we find ourselves in the asking.
Even though Dylan’s melody might sound somber, it holds power. It reminds us that even against the wind, we keep moving. We search. We feel. We grieve. But we also grow.
And maybe, just maybe, after being pushed down, we turn—physically, emotionally, spiritually—and find that the very wind trying to hold us back can also help us fly.
This is the transformation I write about. Not forgetting. Not rushing. But living a life to be remembered—even with a heavy heart.

When in your life have you felt like you were walking “against the wind”? What helped you keep moving forward—and what might it look like now to walk with the wind instead of against it?
