Black History: The Legacy, Rosa Parks

History’s importance goes well beyond passing a class or earning a degree. It’s the record of extraordinary accomplishments, influential moments, and life-altering events that transpired when people walked this earth. Each day we live, we create our own history—one that, eventually, becomes our legacy.

During February, we pay special tribute to Black History Month. It’s a time for reflection and remembrance of the many individuals who shaped the world. Today, I honor and celebrate the legacy of Rosa Parks, an extraordinary civil rights pioneer whose singular act of defiance changed countless lives.

On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks famously refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in Montgomery, Alabama. Although she was not the first Black woman to stand up against bus segregation, her quiet resilience sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott—a massive protest that lasted more than a year. This boycott not only challenged unjust segregation laws but also helped launch Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. into the national spotlight and propelled the Civil Rights Movement forward.

Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913, in Tuskegee, Alabama, and devoted much of her life to advocating for racial equality. She continued her activism long after the boycott, working alongside fellow civil rights leaders, supporting causes of social justice, and inspiring future generations to stand up against injustice.

On the anniversary of her birth, I express gratitude for her bravery and acknowledge the indelible mark she left on history. It’s a legacy that resonates far beyond her own lifetime—one kept alive through our collective remembrance and preserved in the pages of history. This month, and always, let us honor Rosa Parks and thank those who ensure that her story—and the stories of so many others—live on.

“I have learned over the years that when one’s mind is made up, this diminishes fear”
