Fear Factor
Grief Recovery Series: Navigating Emotional Fear in the Land of the Living Written by Patricia D. Freudenberg, Certified End-of-Life Coach
What is this—this fear factor?
It’s not just a term from a reality show. It’s something real. Something that shows up in the quiet, in the chaos, in the moments we try to move forward. Fear is like the wind—always around us, unseen but deeply felt.
As human beings, our psyches are wired to sense danger, but emotional fear is a different kind of flame. It’s not always about survival in the physical sense. It’s about the ache of uncertainty. And the truth is, most fear lives in the future. It’s the fear of what could happen, what might never be the same again.
Even if that fear is based in reality—loss, change, transition—it often involves things we can’t control. So the question becomes: How do we un-fear ourselves? How do we change the channel, turn the coin, shift the gear?
The answer? Hope.
Hope is the antidote. Hope is the seed. Hope doesn’t deny fear—it simply doesn’t let fear take over the driver’s seat.
Hope empowers. Hope appreciates. Hope is a promise—not that things will go back to how they were, but that new meaning can grow, even from sorrow.
So yes, fear is a factor. But hope is a force.
And if you’re reading this—if you’re still in the land of the living—then hope is available to you, one breath and one step at a time.
Prompt for Reflection:
What fear has been following you in your grief? And how might you plant even a small seed of hope today?
