Healing Through Legacy

Grief Redefined

Southbury, CT – July 25, 2025 – Certified End-of-Life Coach and author Patricia D. Freudenberg, Founder and CEO of Miss-U-Gram®, will be a featured speaker at the EverMindful IRL Mental Health & Wellness Event in Southbury, Connecticut, on Saturday, July 26, 2025, from 8 AM to 5 PM.

Her presentation, “Simply Grief Recovery Through Legacy,” introduces a groundbreaking perspective on the grieving process, redefining recovery by focusing on the power of legacy.

The traditional five stages of grief, originally defined by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross—denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance—have evolved over time with an added sixth stage, Finding Meaning, by grief expert David Kessler. Freudenberg introduces a seventh stage, “Living Your Legacy,” which she describes as:

This unique approach encourages individuals to honor their loved ones by carrying forward their values, stories, and influence—turning grief into an active expression of love and hope. Legacy-building, Freudenberg teaches, is not only a tribute to the deceased but also a profound act of self-discovery and healing.

Freudenberg is also the author of Live Your Legacy: A New Spin on Mourning, where she expands on this seventh stage, guiding readers to transform grief into personal growth through meaningful actions.

CONTINUED: GRIEF REDEFINED – THE 7 STAGES EXPANDED

The stages of grief, first outlined in Elisabeth Kübler-Ross’s 1969 book On Death and Dying, have been expanded by experts to better reflect the emotional journey after a significant loss. Below is a summarized guide to the 7 Stages of Grief – Redefined:

Denial – The initial shock, serving as a protective buffer while the mind absorbs the reality of loss.

Anger – A natural emotional release, often expressed as frustration, blame, or resentment.

Bargaining – A hopeful but often futile attempt to negotiate for a different outcome, either spiritually or mentally.

Depression – Deep sadness, withdrawal, and acknowledgment of the permanence of the loss.

Acceptance – A state of peace and resolution, embracing life without resistance to the loss.

Finding Meaning – Introduced by David Kessler, this stage focuses on discovering purpose, growth, and understanding through the experience of grief.

Living Your Legacy – Introduced by Patricia D. Freudenberg, this stage emphasizes honoring loved ones by embodying their values, sharing their stories, and creating a meaningful life that reflects their influence.

“In honoring the memory of those we’ve lost, we simultaneously learn to honor our own lives. Legacy is both a tribute to them and a powerful testament to the life we are crafting.”
— Patricia D. Freudenberg
