What to Expect in Grief
By Patricia D. Freudenberg
Today’s reflection highlights a stage often described as Depression—the deep, quiet ache of grief.
This phase is marked by overwhelming feelings of sadness, emptiness, and despair. It often sets in when the full reality of the loss begins to settle. Individuals may experience emotional numbness, fatigue, and a withdrawal from social interaction. Activities that once brought joy might feel meaningless. Sleep and appetite may be disrupted, and the days can feel heavy.
As painful as it is, this stage is a natural response to profound loss. It is not a weakness or failure—it is grief expressing itself deeply.
As a Certified End-of-Life Coach, I recognize that this is where the path may blur between emotional grief and clinical depression. I always emphasize the importance of monitoring your mental health closely. If the depression becomes prolonged or includes thoughts of harm to oneself or others, I strongly recommend seeking professional medical or psychological support.
One valuable piece of guidance I offer: listen to your circle. If several people who love and support you are expressing concern, take a moment to consider what they see. Sometimes, majority rules in a loving way that could help guide you toward healing.
Research Insight According to Stanford University’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, depression is one of the lowest vibrational emotional states a person can experience. It is closely tied to the emotional frequencies of fear, powerlessness, and deep grief—a sibling trio of emotional weight. Depression is not simply a mental state, but an energetic shift that impacts the entire being.
Stanford research supports early recognition of these symptoms and encourages a supportive community approach, professional care when needed, and spiritual or emotional tools for grounding. Understanding depression not just as a feeling, but as a vibration of being, can open the door to gentle transformation.
