Grief Recovery Series – Written by Patricia D. Freudenberg
Today, I’m going to dive a little deeper and get a little spiritual.
Harmonic Residence—this phrase stayed with me the moment I heard it. It wasn’t from a sermon, nor from a traditional philosophy class. It came to me when I was listening to an Audible book, and it sparked something profound.
What is Harmonic Residence?
I’m not talking about the temple where you gather in community or fellowship. I’m talking about the temple of your being—your body, your mind, the place where your soul resides.
In grief, chaos often takes center stage. Confusion, disorder, and emotional storms can settle in. That inner chaos eventually creates dis-ease. But here’s the key: your soul remains untouched. No matter what happens to your body, no matter what storms rage around you, your inner temple—when nurtured—can remain whole.
However, your mind can be tricky. It can trap you in grief’s weight. That’s why finding harmony in your temple takes conscious effort.
How Do We Reach Harmonic Residence?
Harmony begins with intentional stillness.
Music, writing, or simply being can align you back to center.
Silence—as simple as it sounds—has always been a universal prescription for inner peace.
In the Bible, it says, “Be still and know that I am God.” Even if you do not subscribe to that belief, there’s wisdom in stillness itself: Be still and know you are alive. Be still and know you came from somewhere. Be still in wonderment.
Theologists, philosophers, and even modern motivational speakers all share the same truth, just in different words:
Harmony is peace. Peace is healing.
When you learn to quiet your mind, even for moments, you begin to feel that residence of harmony within your own temple—an unshakable state that exists even when grief knocks at your door.
Stanford Fun Fact
A Stanford University study on music and brainwave synchronization revealed that slow, rhythmic music can induce alpha brainwave patterns—the same patterns linked to relaxation, reduced anxiety, and emotional balance. This means listening to calming music doesn’t just feel good; it literally tunes your brain toward harmony.
“The soul is never broken—it is the mind that must be mended to hear its song again.” – Patricia D. Freudenberg
Prompt for Reflection
Where in your body do you feel harmony the most?
Take five quiet minutes today and notice it. Write about it, hum a tune, or simply sit with it.
