A Grief Recovery Newsletter Written by Patricia D. Freudenberg
There is joy, and there is pain.
Sunshine and rain.
Yes, those are lyrics from a classic by Frankie Beverly and Maze. And no, that is not accidental. Music has always told the truth before we were ready to say it out loud.
This is the dual world we live in.
Where there is life, there will be death.
Where there is attachment, there will be loss.
That is not pessimism. That is reality.
But here is the pivot.
Joy is a choice.
Now let’s be honest. That can feel almost offensive when circumstances are screaming otherwise, when grief is heavy, when the phone call comes, when the diagnosis lands, when the silence is louder than the noise.
It is possible to choose joy.
It is not always probable without intention.
And that is the challenge.
Sometimes the weight we feel is not a stop sign. It is a signal. A red light asking us to pause. A warning that our emotional reserves are low. A reminder that we must breathe before we break.
Stop.
Inhale.
Exhale.
Recharge.
Return to light.
How?
Through appreciation.
Through memory stewardship. Not rehearsing the worst moments, but intentionally revisiting the good ones. The laughter. The ordinary Tuesdays. The way they said your name. The smell of the kitchen. The warmth of a shared glance.
The sad memories will surface. That is human. But recovery is not the absence of pain. It is the art of returning from it.
Practice does not make perfect.
Practice makes better.
Grief recovery is not about pretending. It is about rebuilding emotional equity one thought at a time. Replacing one heavy memory with a gentle one. Replacing one dark frame with a brighter image.
This is my area of focus as a grief consultant. Not to deny pain. Not to rush mourning. But to teach the return.
To live a life that will be remembered.
By honoring what was.
And embracing what is becoming.
This is not denial.
This is resilience.
This is recovery.
Book Recommendation
If you are looking for a starting point, I invite you to read Live Your Legacy: A New Spin on Mourning by Patricia D. Freudenberg.
It is a guidebook and journal, an easy read. Fifty pages designed for reflection, not overwhelm. It is an inward journey. A stepping stone, not a mountain. A place to begin when everything feels too large to carry.
Sometimes the first step toward joy is simply understanding that you are allowed to take one.

Reflection
Where in your life right now are you rehearsing pain more than possibility?
Write down one good memory.
Sit with it for sixty seconds.
Notice what shifts.
Do it again tomorrow.
Quote of the Day
“Joy is not the denial of pain. It is the decision to rise after it.”
Patricia D. Freudenberg
We cannot eliminate contrast. But we can choose how we respond to it.
Sunshine and rain will both visit.
Your recovery depends on how you shelter, how you water, and how you grow.
