The Art of Contemplation
The “Art of Contemplation” isn’t a term directly used within the Book of Psalms itself. Psalms is a book in the Bible filled with hymns, prayers, and poems that express a wide range of emotions from joy and gratitude to lament and sorrow, often reflecting deep contemplation and meditation on God’s character, deeds, and creation.
However, the idea of contemplation aligns well with many of the Psalms, as they encourage reflection on one’s life, God’s laws, and His works. For example, Psalm 1 contrasts the way of the righteous and the wicked, encouraging meditation on the law of the Lord. Similarly, Psalm 119, the longest chapter in the Bible, extensively praises and contemplates the laws, statutes, and precepts of the Lord.
While there isn’t a specific section labeled as the “Art of Contemplation,” the entire Book of Psalms can be approached as a guide for contemplative practice, offering language and imagery to help believers meditate on their faith, the greatness of God, and the intricacies of human emotion in relation to the divine.
Reading through different Psalms and reflecting on their meanings is a way to engage in the art of contemplation.
