Set Up or Set Back?
Written by Patricia D. Freudenberg
Set Up or Set Back? That is a question worth asking whenever life delivers an unexpected blow.
In life, we all experience setbacks. Some are minor inconveniences. Others shake us to our core. Grief is often one of the most profound setbacks a person can face. It can feel as though you were not only knocked down but launched a hundred feet backward from where you thought you were headed.
The pain is real. The confusion is real. The sense of loss is real.
But what if there is another way to look at it?
What if what feels like a setback is actually a setup?
I understand that this is not always an easy concept to entertain. When emotions are raw and life feels unfair, the idea may seem impossible. Yet simply being open-minded to another perspective can become an avenue toward recovery.
Life is filled with mysteries. None of us can fully explain every challenge, every loss, or every unexpected turn. What we do know is that every one of us will eventually face mortality. Every one of us will experience change. Every one of us will encounter moments that force us to reevaluate our priorities.
Sometimes those moments become turning points.
What if this challenge is inviting you to see life differently?
What if this experience causes you to appreciate what truly matters?
What if it inspires you to take action on something you’ve been postponing?
What if it reminds you that your own time is precious?
The moment we shift from feeling permanently defeated to becoming curious about what comes next, something begins to change within us. Appreciation often follows awareness. Gratitude can elevate our emotional state. A renewed perspective can influence our thoughts, behaviors, and decisions. Over time, those choices can create entirely new outcomes.
I often encourage people to use their imagination as part of their recovery. There are countless stories of individuals who transformed hardship into purpose, loss into service, and adversity into growth. Today, I am not going to tell you one of those stories.
Instead, I want you to imagine your own.
Imagine that this chapter is not the end of your story. Imagine that this chapter is preparing you for the next one. Imagine that what feels like a setback today may someday be the very thing that sets you up for greater wisdom, deeper compassion, stronger relationships, or a more meaningful life.
Faith can play an important role in that journey. Many people are familiar with the phrases “Walk by faith, not by sight” and “Faith without works is dead.” While these references come from Scripture, their wisdom extends beyond any single denomination. They remind us that hope is important, but hope must be accompanied by action.
Recovery rarely happens all at once. More often, it begins with a single decision to keep moving forward. Sometimes that means making the phone call you’ve been avoiding, asking for help when you need it, offering support to someone else, starting the project you’ve been putting off, or simply taking a walk and allowing yourself a moment to breathe and think. Trusting the process is important, but participating in it is equally important. Progress is often built through small, consistent actions that eventually lead us to places we never imagined possible.
Sometimes recovery begins with a shift in perspective. Sometimes it begins with a single action. Often, it begins with both.
As a grief consultant, I spend considerable time researching studies and perspectives related to the mind, body, and soul. While I am not a medical doctor, I believe understanding how our thoughts influence our emotions and behaviors can be a valuable part of the healing process. These principles are not limited to grief recovery. They can also be applied to many of life’s challenges, transitions, and setbacks.
The next time life knocks on your door with something unexpected, consider asking yourself one simple question:
Is this truly a setback, or could it be a setup?
Quote of the Day
“A setback only becomes permanent when we stop moving. As long as we remain open, life continues to offer new directions.”

In Reflection
Think about a challenge, disappointment, or loss that changed the direction of your life.
Looking back, can you identify any lessons, opportunities, strengths, or blessings that emerged because of that experience?
What might change if you viewed your current challenge through the lens of possibility instead of limitation?
